Bygrove Primary School, Tower Hamlets

Why Choose This Project?Teacher observations highlighted that pupils were not as active as they could be during their PE lessons and the time was not being maximised to its full potential.  The school had previously done a lot of work around healthy eating and felt that with the issues of obesity in Tower Hamlets it was important to utilise this time to its full.

What Did The School Want To Achieve Through This Project?

  1. To increase the pupils stamina and fitness levels
  2. To increase the pupils enthusiasm of PE lessons
  3. To increase teachers confidence in teaching PE

What Did The School Do To Achieve These Aims?

The project was supported throughout by the Healthy Lives team to discuss aims, objectives, means of collecting data and the practicalities of carrying out the project.  Through a physical activity Advanced Healthy Schools project in another school, the Healthy Lives team put the school in contact with the PE Teacher at Bow and Stepney Green Secondary Schools who is also a PE Sports Coordinator in Tower Hamlets Youth Sport Foundation.  Using lesson plans he developed he was able to offer the school many sessions over the term to observe, team teach and train several teachers and TA’s to utilise every aspect of the PE lessons using the most of time, skills and resources. This was to ensure pupils were active at all times whilst challenging previous negative attitudes towards PE and participation.  Teaching staff were also trained how to do the bleep test to measure pupil progress, and information about why it is important to be fit and healthy was also introduced into the PE lessons. A long term relationship has been cultivated between Paul and the school and he will be returning to do further work next year.

What Data Did The School Collect and What Was The result?

A pupil survey asked “How excited were you about PE before the project and how excited are you now?” There was a 76% increase in pupils reporting that they were 'very excited' about PE

Teacher Comments

“It has allowed me to further develop my own knowledge and understanding in delivering fitness activities and carrying out fitness tests.” – Atera Meho, Teacher

“Taking charge of the bleep testing was a big responsibility as I knew that accurate records had to be kept...I feel that organising the results has improved my confidence within the PE area...I was also asked to train other support staff for next year.” – Laura Gibbs, Year 5 Teaching Assistant

Conclusion

“The outcomes of the project exceeded my expectations.  It will continue next year involving more classes...but most of all children who are motivated by their own success and their sense of achievement go home and enthuse their siblings and parents about fitness and being healthy.” Gosia Martinez, Healthy Schools Coordinator
